It’s the Fourth of July. The grills are smoking, the playlists are curated with the best urban gospel and contemporary hits, and the sky is about to be lit up with enough fireworks to wake the whole neighborhood. We celebrate independence, the kind that was signed on paper over 200 years ago. But for many of us, especially the creatives, the dreamers, and the industry newbies, there’s a quiet tension between the celebration outside and the lockdown happening inside.
How do you celebrate “independence” when your soul feels like it’s still in chains?
At GospelRhythms, we’re all about that soulful lifestyle, the music, and the culture. But we also know that the loudest “Happy Independence Day” post on Instagram can sometimes hide a heart that’s still struggling with fear, shame, or the crushing weight of comparison. This year, we’re looking past the fireworks to the only kind of freedom that actually changes your life: the real freedom found in Christ.
Independence vs. Spiritual Freedom: There’s a Difference
In the culture we live in, “independence” is often sold to us as self-rule. It’s the “I don’t need anyone,” “I’m my own boss,” “I make the rules” mentality. But if we’re being honest, that kind of independence can be its own kind of prison. When you are the only one in charge, you are the only one responsible for your failures, your image, and your future. That’s a heavy yoke to carry.
Biblical freedom, the kind spoken about in Galatians 5:1, isn’t about being independent of everything; it’s about being set free from the things that kill our spirit and set free for a life of purpose.
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” , Galatians 5:1
For a lot of us, that “yoke of slavery” isn’t a physical chain. It’s the mental health battle that many young people face today, navigating religious doubt and the pressure to have it all together. Real freedom is acknowledging that we weren’t meant to carry the weight of the world on our own.
The Creative’s Chains: The Comparison Trap
If you’re a creative, whether you’re a singer, a producer, a writer, or a digital artist, you know the specific kind of bondage that comes with the “Industry.” We chase the charts, the likes, and the validation. We look at who’s “blowing up” on TikTok and suddenly, our own gift feels small.

This is the “Comparison Trap.” It’s a chain that keeps you from creating from a place of joy. When your identity is tied to your performance, you aren’t free. You’re a slave to the algorithm. You’re a slave to people’s opinions. You’re a slave to a version of success that’s always moving the goalposts.
True freedom means being unshackled from the pressure to perform. It’s the realization that your value isn’t in your latest project, but in whose you are. When we talk about navigating mental health and well-being, we have to talk about letting go of the need to be “perfect” for the public.
Who the Son Sets Free is Free Indeed
Jesus said in John 8:36, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
Notice he didn’t say “free-ish.” He didn’t say “free until you mess up again.” He said free indeed. This is the core of the Gospel. It’s the “Real Freedom” that outlasts any national holiday.
Being “free indeed” means:
- Free from Shame: You don’t have to live in the shadow of your past mistakes. The “Real Life” segments we share at GospelRhythms are full of stories of people who found grace when they thought they were too far gone.
- Free from Fear: Fear of failure is the number one dream-killer for creatives. But when you know God has your back, the fear loses its grip.
- Free from People-Pleasing: You stop living for the “amen” and start living for the One who gave you the gift in the first place.

Unshackling Your Creative Purpose
So, how do we actually walk in this freedom? Especially when the industry is telling us to “grind until you die” and “do whatever it takes to win”?
First, we have to reclaim our identity. Many of us are in a search for identity, trying to find out where we fit. When we find that identity in Christ, the chains of comparison start to rust and break.
If you’re an industry newbie, here’s a piece of advice: Don’t sacrifice your peace for a placement. Real freedom is being able to say “no” to opportunities that compromise your values. It’s being able to rest without feeling guilty. It’s understanding that your “Rhythm” is unique to you, and you don’t have to match anyone else’s tempo.
Finding Freedom in Community
We weren’t meant to be “independent” islands. Even the most successful icons in gospel music will tell you they didn’t get there alone. We need community and belonging to keep us grounded.
There is a specific kind of freedom that comes when you’re surrounded by people who love you for who you are, not what you can do for them. That’s the heart of the faith community. It’s a place where you can drop the mask, stop the performance, and just breathe.

As you watch the fireworks tonight, take a second to check your spirit. Is there something you’re still carrying? Is there a chain of unforgiveness, a yoke of addiction, or a weight of “not being enough” that’s keeping you from truly celebrating?
July 4th is a great day for a BBQ, but any day is a good day to be free.
The Sound of Freedom
This weekend, let the music move you, but let the Truth set you free. Whether you’re listening to the latest urban contemporary tracks or a classic gospel choir, let the lyrics remind you that the victory has already been won. You don’t have to fight for your freedom; you just have to walk in the freedom Christ already bought for you.
From all of us at GospelRhythms, we wish you a safe, soulful, and truly free Fourth of July.
Stay Soulful,
GospelRhythms
