Fit for the Journey: Honoring God With the Body That Carries You (2026 Mother’s Day Edition)
Good morning, beautiful people, and welcome to another edition of Soul & Self-Care Sunday. This is the space where we pull back the curtain on our lives and take a real, honest moment to check in with our spirit, our soul, and our mind. But today, I want to lean into something we often overlook in our spiritual walk: the body.
We spend so much time talking about mindset and soul care: which are vital: that we sometimes forget that the body is the actual vehicle carrying the assignment. If the vehicle breaks down, the assignment sits on the side of the road. We’ve got to make sure we are fit for the journey God has placed before us.
The Wake-Up Call in the Dominican Republic
I recently took a trip to the Dominican Republic, and let me tell you, traveling will remind you real quick whether your body is being cared for or just being dragged along for the ride. I went on this trip with an injured hand. Now, you might think, “It’s just a hand, Roe,” but because that one part of me was compromised, I became hyper-aware of how much I needed every other part of my body to be at 100%.
I needed my knees to be strong. I needed my legs to hold me. I needed my back to be resilient and my endurance to be high. Traveling requires effort. Moving through airports, lifting bags, and navigating new terrain requires a strength that you cannot simply conjure up on the spot.
Here is the truth I realized while standing in that terminal: Strength is built before the journey.
We often wait until we are in the middle of a crisis or a heavy season to ask God for strength. But God is saying, “I want to build your resilience now so you can carry what I’m about to give you later.” If you are waiting for the trip to start getting in shape, you’re already behind. We have to steward the body today for the places God is taking us tomorrow.
Your Body is Part of Your Assignment
We love to pray, “Lord, use me.” We sing it in worship, we write it in our journals, and we declare it over our lives. But have we ever stopped to ask, “Lord, help me steward the body You use”?
Your body isn’t just about your appearance or fitting into a certain size. Your body is your transportation. It is your instrument. It is your temple. Most importantly, your body is part of your assignment.
In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, the Word tells us: “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit…? Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
When we realize that the Holy Spirit lives inside this physical frame, it changes the way we look at a walk around the block or a glass of water. It’s no longer about vanity; it’s about physical fitness as a form of worship.
Romans 12:1 takes it a step further: “Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God: this is your true and proper worship.”
Worship isn’t just what we do during the first twenty minutes of a church service. Worship is how we live. It’s how we rest, how we eat, how we move, and how we recover. When you choose to hydrate your body, you are honoring the Creator who made it. When you choose to stretch those stiff muscles, you are maintaining the temple.
Stop Waiting for “Perfect”
I know what some of you are thinking. “Roe, I don’t have a gym membership. I don’t have the cute matching sets. I don’t have an hour a day to dedicate to a workout.”
Listen to me: You do not have to wait until everything is perfect to start moving. You don’t need the perfect schedule or the perfect weather. You just need a willing heart and a little bit of intentionality.
Zechariah 4:10 reminds us: “Do not despise these small beginnings.”
If you are at a hotel, walk the hallway. If you are near a beach, walk the sand. If you are in your living room, just stretch. If you’ve been sitting at your desk for three hours, stand up! Small steps still count. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator is an act of stewardship. Choosing water over soda is an act of stewardship.
Self-care isn’t always a luxury spa day (though we love those!). Sometimes, self-care is simply saying, “I need to strengthen this body because God still has places for me to go.”
Resilience vs. Rescue
Traveling with that injured hand taught me a spiritual lesson, too. When you’re moving through life: lifting the bags of responsibility, balancing the “luggage” of your family, and managing your “documents” of purpose: you realize that health is not optional.
If you don’t have a companion to carry everything for you, you have two choices: you either make arrangements for help, or you stay fit enough to carry what life requires of you.
In our spiritual lives, we often pray for a rescue. We want God to take the load away. But sometimes, God doesn’t want to remove the load; He wants to strengthen the back that carries it. He’s not looking to rescue you from the journey; He’s looking to build your resilience for the journey.
Isaiah 40:29-31 is a promise we should all hold onto: “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak… Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength… they will walk and not be faint.”
Notice it says they will walk. Walking matters. Moving matters. Endurance matters. God cares about your spirit, but He also cares about the vessel that houses it.
Stewardship is Worship
Let’s be real for a second. We often ask God to bless what we continue to neglect. We ask Him for more energy, but we refuse to go to bed at a decent hour. We ask Him for healing, but we ignore every warning sign our body gives us. We ask Him for peace, but we keep feeding our bodies stress, sugar, and chaos.
There is no condemnation here, only an invitation. It’s an invitation to stop treating your body like an afterthought.
3 John 1:2 says: “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.”
God wants you whole. Not just spiritually inspired but physically depleted. He doesn’t want you to be anointed but exhausted. You cannot pour from an empty soul, and you cannot keep running on a neglected body.
The Soul & Self-Care Challenge
I want to challenge you this week to stop viewing movement as a punishment and start viewing it as gratitude. When you move, you are saying, “Lord, thank You for legs that can walk. Thank You for lungs that can breathe. Thank You for a body that is still carrying me.”
Psalm 139:14 says, “I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” If we are fearfully and wonderfully made, we ought to be fearfully and wonderfully maintained.
Your Challenge:
Choose one simple way to move every single day this week.
Walk for 10 minutes.
Stretch before bed.
Dance to your favorite worship song.
Park a little further away from the store.
Drink one extra bottle of water.
Don’t compare your body to anyone else’s. Just honor the one God gave you.
Final Thoughts
Your soul needs care. Your mind needs care. And your body needs care. None of it is separate from your worship. You don’t have to be perfect; you just have to be intentional.
Take care of your body before life forces you to notice it. Move while you can. Stretch while you can. Strengthen while you can. And most importantly, thank God for the body that has carried you this far.

This is your reminder: caring for your body is not vanity; it is stewardship. And stewardship is worship.
Stay strong, stay peaceful, and stay blessed and grateful. I’ll see you next Sunday!
