There are seasons when life seems to keep pressing the same bruise.
The bill is still due. The diagnosis is still uncertain. The relationship still has no clear answer. The opportunity has not opened. The prayer has not been answered the way you hoped.
You may be past who you used to be, but not yet standing in the life you believe God promised. You are no longer there, but you are not yet here.
That space can feel confusing. It can make you question your timing, your choices, your faith, and sometimes even God.
So what does it really mean to be with God when life will not let up?
It does not mean believers avoid trouble. It means trouble does not get to have the final word.
With God Does Not Mean Life Will Always Be Easy
Faith is not a contract promising that every cup will pass, every mountain will move quickly, or every door will open on schedule.
Jesus Himself experienced deep anguish in the Garden of Gethsemane. Matthew 26 shows Him praying honestly before the cross:
“My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.”
Jesus did not pretend the assignment was easy. He did not hide His distress behind religious language. He brought His full humanity before the Father.
That matters because many people have been taught that strong faith means never feeling afraid, disappointed, exhausted, or confused.
But Jesus shows us that you can be fully surrendered and still be emotionally honest.
You can say:
- “God, I do not understand this.”
- “God, I am tired of carrying this.”
- “God, I wish You would change the situation.”
- “God, I need another way.”
Then, after telling the truth, you can still say, “Nevertheless, I trust You.”
That is not weakness. That is faith in the tension.
The Space Between No Longer and Not Yet
Many of us live in the middle.
We are no longer who we were, but we are not yet who we are becoming. We have left one season, but the next one has not fully appeared.
That middle place can feel like delay. Sometimes it feels like suspension.
But suspension is not always falling. Sometimes you are being held.
God may be strengthening your character before expanding your platform. He may be developing your discernment before giving you greater responsibility. He may be protecting you from arriving somewhere you are not yet prepared to sustain.
This does not mean every delay is comfortable or that every hardship was directly sent by God. Scripture does not ask us to call evil good or pretend pain does not hurt.
It does mean God can meet you in the middle and redeem what tried to break you.
Romans 8:28 reminds us that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. The verse does not say all things are good. It says God is powerful enough to work through all things.
That includes the waiting room.
That includes the unanswered question.
That includes the season where you are doing your best to keep believing.
God Can Handle Your Honest Questions
Sometimes people pull away from God because they believe their questions make them faithless.
They wonder:
“Why did You allow this?”
“Why has this taken so long?”
“Why did You close that door?”
“Why am I still fighting the same battle?”
God is not intimidated by your questions. He is not fragile. He does not need you to perform confidence while your heart is falling apart.
The Psalms are filled with honest cries, confusion, grief, and renewed trust. Jesus prayed through anguish. Job questioned God. David worshiped while running for his life.
Honesty can be part of intimacy.
The important question is not whether you have questions. The question is where you take them.
Take them to God.
Then stay close enough to listen.
Sometimes the answer is yes. Sometimes it is not yet. Sometimes God gives a different answer than the one you requested. And sometimes His invitation is simply, “Walk with Me.”
When It Becomes Just You and God
There are roads other people cannot walk for you.
Your family may love you, but they cannot make your decision. Your friends may pray for you, but they cannot carry every burden. Your pastor may encourage you, but they cannot obey God in your place.
Even Jesus’ closest disciples struggled to remain awake with Him in Gethsemane.
There are moments when the crowd gets quiet and the road becomes personal. It can feel lonely, but loneliness is not always abandonment.
Sometimes it is an invitation to discover that God is present when everybody else has stepped away.
John 14:16–17 promises that the Holy Spirit is with believers and lives in them. That means God’s presence is not limited to a sanctuary, a worship service, or a perfect emotional moment.
He is with you in the hospital room.
He is with you on the late shift.
He is with you in the courtroom, classroom, bedroom, boardroom, and waiting room.
He is with you when you feel strong, and when you have no words left.

Stop Measuring the Mountain Without Measuring God
David walked onto a battlefield and saw what everyone else saw: a giant.
But David also saw something everybody else had forgotten, the size and faithfulness of God.
David was not pretending Goliath was small. Goliath was dangerous. The threat was real. David’s confidence was not based on his own size, skill, or status.
His confidence was based on the fact that God was with him.
First Samuel 16:13 tells us that after Samuel anointed David, the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him. David’s strength was never just personality. It was not merely talent. God’s presence gave him courage for an assignment he could not complete in his own strength.
That same truth speaks to us today:
You may not have every resource, but God is with you.
You may not know every connection you think you need, but God is with you.
You may not feel ready, but God is with you.
You may not see the answer yet, but God is with you.
Romans 8:31 asks, “If God is for us, who can be against us?”
That does not mean nobody will oppose you. It means opposition is not greater than God’s presence.
What Does the Oil on Your Life Mean?
In biblical language, “the oil on your life” points to God’s presence, empowerment, consecration, and work through you. It is not a literal substance sitting on your body.
In Scripture, oil was used to set apart kings, priests, and leaders. When David was anointed, the oil was the visible sign, but the Holy Spirit was the true source of power.
The oil is not simply talent.
A person can be gifted without being mature. Someone can sing beautifully, lead confidently, speak eloquently, or attract attention and still need God to shape their character.
The deeper evidence of God’s work is seen in truth, love, obedience, courage, wisdom, compassion, and service.
Gethsemane gives us another picture. The name is associated with an olive press, where olives were crushed to release oil.
That image can help us understand difficult seasons, but with wisdom. Pressure does not automatically produce spiritual growth. Pressure surrendered to God can produce something valuable.
Pain can deepen compassion.
Waiting can develop endurance.
Failure can teach humility.
A battle can reveal courage.
A hard season can drive you into a deeper relationship with the Holy Spirit.
The oil is not proof that life will never press you. It is evidence that the press does not get to waste you.

Call on God by the Name You Need
When life will not let up, remember who God has revealed Himself to be.
- Jehovah Jireh, the Lord who provides.
- Jehovah Rapha, the Lord who heals.
- Jehovah Shalom, the Lord who gives peace.
- Jehovah Nissi, the Lord who fights for us and gives victory.
- Jehovah Rohi, the Lord who shepherds and guides us.
Do not let fear name your situation before faith names your God.
The mountain may be real, but it is not God.
The diagnosis may be serious, but it is not God.
The delay may be frustrating, but it is not God.
The closed door may hurt, but it is not God.
God remains greater than the thing standing in front of you.

We Win While We Are Waiting
Winning with God does not always look like immediate escape.
Sometimes winning means you kept your heart soft after disappointment.
Sometimes it means you prayed instead of quitting.
Sometimes it means you chose worship over worry, faith over fear, and trust over control.
Sometimes you are winning simply because you are still standing.
With God, you do not have to wait until everything is perfect to experience victory. You can find strength while healing, hope while becoming, and peace while the answer is still forming.
You may be in the garden, but resurrection is still part of the story.
You may be in the press, but the pressure does not define the final product.
You may be between no longer and not yet, but God is present in the middle.
So take the next step.
Tell God the truth. Release what you cannot control. Remember what He has already brought you through. Keep walking.
With God, you are not abandoned in the pressure.
With God, you are not forgotten in the waiting.
With God, you can face what life brings, and still become everything grace is forming you to be.

Frequently Asked Questions About Living With God
What does it mean to be with God?
Being with God means living in relationship with Him through faith, prayer, Scripture, obedience, and the presence of the Holy Spirit. It does not mean life will be trouble-free. It means you do not face trouble alone.
Does trusting God mean I cannot ask questions?
No. Scripture shows faithful people asking God honest questions. Trust does not require pretending. Bring your questions to God while remaining open to His wisdom and direction.
What does “the oil on your life” mean?
It is a biblical metaphor for God’s presence, empowerment, consecration, and work through a person. It is not merely talent or popularity. It is grace connected to God’s purpose and demonstrated through character, obedience, and service.
How can I trust God when He does not remove the problem?
Begin with honesty. Tell God how you feel, remember His past faithfulness, seek wisdom through Scripture, and take the next obedient step. Trust often grows one decision at a time.

Prayer
Father, meet us in every place where life feels heavy. Teach us to trust You when the cup does not pass and when the answer looks different from what we expected. Help us remember that pressure does not mean abandonment. Give us courage for today, wisdom for the next step, and peace in the places we cannot control. Let Your Spirit strengthen us, shape us, and work through us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Reflection Question
Where are you currently living between “no longer” and “not yet,” and what would it look like to invite God into that space today?
